The Hamilton-Wentworth Elementary Teachers’ Local is a union of over 2,500 teachers in Hamilton, Ontario. Our union builds on a tradition of labour in Hamilton that is over a century in the making.

We aren’t just here to get a better deal for teachers. We’re here to be a voice demanding fair treatment, justice and opportunity for all. Because a strong teachers’ union means a stronger education system, and a stronger education system means a stronger society for us all.

A LEGACY OF LABOUR

HWETL is part of a legacy of labour in Hamilton. We trace our roots back to the education workers who first demanded better for their students and fellow teachers, and every member is a part of that ongoing work.

Our history is one built by past educators who stood together and demanded better for each other and the community. We fight to uphold our rights as workers and to improve the quality of public education for all. That is what HWETL stands for.

For the public, we also provide more general public education resources that can be found here without needing a membership account.

HWETL is strengthened by the participation and leadership of its members. There are many ways to get involved, including serving on committees, attending annual meetings, participating in professional learning, volunteering, or contributing to local initiatives that support educators and public education. By working together, we strengthen our profession, our union, and the communities we serve.
